Wildfire Data
Active fires from satellites, linked to official incidents and perimeters.
Satellite fire detections grouped into fires and matched to the official incident name, size, containment and perimeter, with a daily smoke overlay. Updated every 3 hours.
What you get
-
Plain files over HTTPS
Tables as JSON or CSV, one file per partition; ready-made files at stable paths, plus every dataset as one CSV or Parquet file. No key or signup.
-
Versions you can cite
Every update gets a version id, and a pinned URL always returns the same data. The first version of each month is kept for good, so results stay reproducible.
-
Checked before publishing
Each update is validated against its contract. If a check fails, the last good version stays live.
-
Licenses up front
Every dataset names its source, its license, the exact credit line and whether commercial use is allowed.
Datasets
All 4 datasets-
Active fires (US and Canada)
Satellite fire detections from the last 7 days over the United States and Canada, grouped into fire events and linked to the official incident (name, acres, containment, IRWIN id) where one exists. Detections in the same or adjacent 1 km grid cells within 48 hours of each other form one event; repeat views of the same spot by a second satellite on the same overpass are counted once. Built from NASA FIRMS VIIRS near-real-time detections (S-NPP, NOAA-20 and NOAA-21), NIFC WFIGS current incidents and perimeters, and Natural Earth state and province boundaries.
-
Current wildland fire incidents (US)
Every current US wildland fire incident in IRWIN: wildfires, prescribed fires and complexes that are not yet out, with name, location, size, containment, cause and resources. From the NIFC WFIGS current incident locations service, which drops an incident 3 to 14 days after its last update.
-
Fire perimeters (US), current and archived
Current US interagency wildland fire perimeters as GeoJSON, plus an archive of every perimeter shape and every snapshot of the current layer since this dataset started, so a fire's growth can be followed after WFIGS drops it. From the NIFC WFIGS current interagency perimeters service.
-
Smoke plumes (NOAA HMS), last 7 days
Daily smoke plume polygons over North America for the last 7 days, drawn by NOAA Hazard Mapping System analysts from satellite imagery and labelled Light, Medium or Heavy. The labels are visual density categories of smoke anywhere in the air column, not surface concentrations.
